Bandwidth-Delay Product

Calculate how much data must be in flight to fully use a network path.

How this calculator works

Enter bandwidth (mbps), round-trip latency (ms). CalcStack applies the displayed formula and reports each intermediate planning value with the units shown.

Formula / method

BDP bytes = bandwidth bits/s × round-trip seconds ÷ 8

Worked example

1 Gbps with 40 ms round-trip latency has a 5 MB bandwidth-delay product.

Assumptions and limitations

Bandwidth is sustained and latency is round-trip time.

TCP congestion control, loss, receiver windows, protocol overhead and variable latency are not modeled.
