Formula / method
CV = (standard deviation ÷ mean) × 100
Worked example
A mean of 10 and standard deviation of 2 gives a coefficient of variation of 20%.
Assumptions and limitations
The mean is positive and ratio-scale measurements make relative spread meaningful.
CV is not meaningful when the mean is zero or when the scale has no true zero.
